Today is day 17 of me quitting alcohol and sugar! And I can honestly say I feel grrrrrrreat!
My sleep is better
I have more energy
I've lost a little weight
That awful post Christmas bloated feeling has gone
My skin feels lovely
I've given up alcohol before, but never sugar. I don't have a massive sweet tooth, but I must admit I've been eating a lot more of it recently and wanted to see how I went if I removed it from my diet.
Well, once I got over the sugar craving (sugar is more addictive than you think) which probably took about a week, it has been plain sailing. I can really recommend giving it a go.
To help me get past that "wanting something sweet" as a treat, with a coffee or after a meal, I made some delicious power balls using things like maple syrup and honey to sweeten them. They've been brilliant and even the kids have switched over to natural sugar treats. There are many to choose from, but here is just one of the recipes. I'll post some more soon :) - ENJOY!
Prune, Date and Hazelnut Chocolate Truffles
Taken from Davina's Book "Sugar Free in a Hurry" (page 154) - I highly recommend this book!
Makes 24
130g hazlenuts
75g soft dates
125g pitted prunes
3 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp runny honey
2 tbsp olive oil
85g dark chocolate (optional)
Preheat oven to 200 degrees/Fan 180/Gas 6. Pop the hazelnuts on a baking tray and roast for 6-8 mins or until they are golden
Place the dates, hazelnuts, prunes in a food processor and blitz
Add the cocoa powder, honey and olive oil and blitz again
Roll the mixture into small balls, 24 in total and pop into the fridge to chill
Added Extras...
For an extra little kick, you can melt some dark chocolate (70% cocoa content preferably) and just dip each of the balls in the melted chocolate so they are half covered. Pop back in the fridge for 15 - 20 mins.
